It happens to all of us.
You're playing a game, and you are struggling to figure something out. You are over thinking it, and one of two things happens:
1) You stumble upon how simple the solution was.
2) You go to a FAQ and realize how stupid you were because it was right there in front of you the whole time.
That's what this thread is for. Tell a story of how dumb you are.
My latest is from Tales of Berseria. I've been trying to get past a barrier in a zone for days, because the end of a quest line lies within. I've been wandering around the first area for days...and I can't figure out how to get past the colored fog. The whole time I'm thinking it has something to do with an environment interaction skill I haven't gotten yet, so I keep looking all over the world.
So I gave up today, because it's one of the last couple things to do before I hit the final dungeon, and went to FAQ.
.....there was a fruit item right there in the zone I'm supposed to eat...right there...the whole time...must have run by it six times never saw the "Check" prompt appear.
So yeah....I'm stupid.

Oh, Wild Arms 2 had a few of these moments for me. I had a tough time trying to figure out how to get the floating platform across the water in the Mt. Chugchug dungeon. I don't think we had internet yet, so I was trying every tool in every direction.
Finally, we go to my cousin's place and I ask him for help. "Honestly, I've tried everything except kicking the wall!" (Kicks wall, and the platform zooms across the water.) "...oh."

I think there was one in Shadow Hearts: Covenant where I was trying beating my head over a puzzle and it turned out that I missed reading a sign with instructions that would have cleared a lot of things up. >.>

Only thing that comes to mind right now is from Lunar TSS -- the part where you go on your first airship ride. The creator of said ship told me something about needing vines, even after I'd gone picked some up, and I ran myself silly all over the world trying to figure out what to do next. And then, purely in frustration, I went over to said airship and clicked the A button. Boom presto, forehead palms, ship crashing and me getting to move on with the story at last.

Gonna be the first to go off RPG here. Growing up I had NES, then Sega Genesis for many years. I had a handful of games including X-men on Sega. The premise was that the danger room was going haywire sending your 4 X-men through many iconic locations. There was a section where you got to fight Mojo after traversing his world, within a time limit. Once you beat him there is a window where you can see the danger room. When the clock gets down so far the room turns red and the text comes on the screen and says, "Quickly. Reset the system." I didn't know what to do. For years.
I sold my Sega and NES for a Playstation. It wasn't until after PS2 that reacquired a Sega and after PS3 that I reacquired X-men. I got the same spot and hand a crazy idea. When the words came up, I hit reset on the Genesis. 1's and 0's start scrolling across the screen. All of a sudden I am in the next section. Son of a . . .

One of my 'I'm stupid' moments had to do with King's Quest 7 when I first played it as a teen. I wasn't... aware of the ability to rotate items on more than one axis when you examined them in your inventory. So, I ended up stuck in one of the desert chapters for a while, because I had no idea that there was a seed inside a container that you pick up. To me, it just looked like the dumb thing was empty. Because, apparently, they thought it was a good idea to require you to tilt the container at a really weird angle to even see the seed hidden in it. I didn't find it out from a strategy guide, though. For some reason, the teachers at school had allowed the game to be installed on one of their computers and one of the other kids got through that part while I watched.
...I had less trouble with the older games like the Colonel's Bequest and the like. And in that one, you had more obscure puzzles AND a murderer killing people off all over the place.

My most recent 'I'm stupid' moment was during the closed beta for FFXIV: ARR. One of the first quests in Ul'dah had you going to a tavern and taking orders. There were four people I needed to talk to; three on the ground floor and one outside... but that last one was on a cliff above the tavern.
I did not immediately realize this.
I spent a good half an hour looking for this guy. Probably passed him few times before I noticed he had the quest marker above his head.

To be fair, I don't think most people would expect the reset button on the Genesis to do anything except resetting the system. This is more like a dick move from the game creators -- a genius dick move, but a dick move none the less.

Haven't needed to recount one of these for a while. In ESO. Quest giver tells me to meet him someplace right outside the tower we're, that the cave is underneath the tower. I go outside, see the marker...but can't find a way down to where it is. I spend the next twenty minutes swimming around the island looking for a path to the cave...when there were stairs leading down from where I exited the tower the whole time.

Had one this morning. I was finishing up Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies and was REALLY into the last trial. I went to hit the save button.... and hit the power button. I hadn't saved in a while, because I'd been so into it.
Backtracking without a skip feature during the final confrontation SUCKS!!!

This one happened an hour ago in DQXI. During a major sidequest during the last third of the game, I get ambushed into two boss fights back to back, with my last save being in town. I struggle through the first fight and my frontline party wipes. Luckily my backup party manages to finish the job, only to be put on the back foot on the second boss, and they wipe.
Here's where the stupid comes in.
I had forgotten that you usually get a full heal during subsequent bosses. So here comes my frontline party to the rescue, and all I can think of is 'Da fuq?'
To top it all off, the boss only needed one more hit to take down.

Got another one from Dragon Quest. Zero might appreciate this one. THIS ONE HAS SPOILERS WHICH I'LL TRY TO KEEP TO A MINIMUM, BUT TAKE CARE READING THIS JUST IN CASE. - - - - - - - - - - - END WARNING. Post-game final boss (keeping spoilers to a MINIMUM), guy was kicking my ass. Wiped a couple times before finally looking at a guide and figured out the very simple trick, without doing which meaning I had been fighting the boss in super-mode this whole time. Best part? I was over-leveled enough to make it through the first two phases before I did the thing. Made for a thematically awesome fight.

Not a game, but a system. My brother won an all expenses paid trip to NC to go see the tire factory from work and have some fun. (He was in the top ten in the country for selling these tires.) He's not a reader, so he asked to borrow my copy of 'Lunar Legend'. Of course, I handed it over and explained that I couldn't find the power cord for my GBA, but maybe our youngest brother had one?
He called me last night to ask if he could use one of the save files, and explained that he's borrowing his wife's DS Lite. What? I thought it couldn't play...
I check my first DS... oh, there's a second slot for GBA games. I never realized, and haven't been able to touch Lunar Legend for years. The more you know...
(He couldn't wait for his trip and already started it. All three of us are avid 'Lunar' fans, and this brother has Althena's Sword as a dagger for a tattoo on his leg.)
