Okay, so I'm all for getting into the spirit of a holiday, but that's when anyone and everyone can freely participate in its joy by their will alone. Valentines Day is not such a day. Halloween- Anyone can decorate and hand out candy if they want to. Christmas- Anyone choosing the religion to do so may celebrate, and even some who don't. Thanksgiving- Anyone can have a big dinner to celebrate. Valentines Day- You celebrate with your significant other. If you don't have one, you're screwed. Don't get me wrong, I am not ranting because I have nobody to spend it with. I accepted that with the fact that I'm a shy nerd a long time ago. No, I am ranting about being slapped in the face with the holiday, when the celebration is not a choice. I walked into school today, and in one of the main halls was a refrigerated case. Next to a table being set up with heart balloons, flowers and stuffed animals. Upon coming through the other way after class, the case was open and a guy was there selling chocolates. I was approached and offered chocolates for my girlfriend. Not having one, I said as much. His face fell and he moved on to someone else. Just a reminder that not everyone can celebrate this holiday. When the time comes when I do have someone else in my life, I can safely say that my feelings for Valentine's day will not change. Happy freaking Valentine's Day everyone.

I kind of feel sorry for the guy selling the chocolates, now. What if he doesn't have a girlfriend? He probably feels even worse. Like on the order of the Grinch selling Christmas decorations before he was converted.
I actually didn't think too much about V-Day other than helping my Dad pick a card out for my mom and showing him what kind of See's Chocolates to order a couple of weeks ago.
Yes, I have to help him think about these things.
But, if I did have a significant other, I think I would care more about how he and I treated each other all year round than just one day.

While I was out today, I was shaking my head watching the last minute buyings of things for V-day.
When I am finally no longer alone, I'll do what any good guy does and treat my lady well on the day...but after all these years of lonely V-days...I share the hatred of it.
