Random thought...
I finished my Phantasy Star II fanfic Restoration a long time ago, I think right before it turned ten years old because I told myself I didn't want an unfinished fanfic that old.
But because I had taken so long, the original host site, the Phantasy Star Pages, went into stasis.
So I was thinking, is it worth setting up a Fanfiction.net account to host an old fic whose fanbase has (probably) long moved on? I mean... Phantasy Star II was a game that came out in 1989/1990 depending on region. It's having its 25th anniversary.
It's bothered me a little bit that no one else has ever read the completed story, though it was in fact completed. But then, it's been a long time so maybe no one would read it anyway and it's a lot of work to get seventy-two chapters (or whatever it turned out to be) online.
On the other hand, I'm not writing anything new (at least not under this name--I'm certainly writing under my real one) and this is the only fic that's bothering me enough I may want to re-post it. It's a big story, but once it's up that account would be going inactive.
Does FF.net allow readers to contact authors outside of reviews? Supposing new readers come and like it, I'm human enough to admit I do appreciate the occasional surprise fan mail, and admittedly I'd be doing this because no one else has finished reading it.

My short answer is "No, it's not worth it." FF.net's heyday was back when we were all still writing Lunar fanfics. Since then FF.net has gone through some rough times. One of the major ones was opening up some major advertisement banners, which ended up opening the site up to viruses, spyware, malware, etc. Now in their defense, they did take care of the problem and cleaned their site up pretty well, but the damage was done and they never fully recovered from the loss of traffic. The real issue is what traffic they do get.
You said that the fic is a PhS II fic. In our day that would have gotten readers. It was still listed under "Phantasy Star II" and the traffic was still there. After the ad thing, their fandom disbursement went from a wide range of fandoms read to only the most popular fandoms read. Not to mention they changed the format so that certain series are all under one heading rather than certain games. All of Phantasy Star is under one heading. I just don't see it getting the response you are hoping for.
I actually took a look at the PhS heading and there were only about 7-8 stories updated/published this year. Of those they tended to have at max 1 review per chapter. In fact that was the norm for most of the first page. There were also quite a few with no reviews, take that how you will.
My recommendation is this, unless PhS is planning a re-make as an anniversary thing FF.net is not going to get you what you hope. Find a site that is dedicated to PhS and still active (maybe like the Shrine was to Lunar) and see if you can post it there. I'd also add an author's note to contact you with feedback. This will get you closer to what you want than FF.net.

I guess the problem is I'm no longer active either so the last Phantasy Star site I can recall being operational with a fanfic archive was the Phantasy Star Cave (which I could not in good conscience support since they also hosted ROMs the last time I checked).
That's too bad all the Phantasy Star stuff at FF.net is lumped all together since there's quite a bit of difference between the classic stuff and what currently comes out. (To the point I pretty much facepalm every time I see Phantasy Star or Shining Something-or-other in the news because it's just not what I remember anymore.)
I'm not really interested in getting new readers or reviews (because this name's not writing anymore) so much as putting the story out there so if anyone searches for it wondering if it ever got finished they can find it.

I guess the problem is I'm no longer active either so the last Phantasy Star site I can recall being operational with a fanfic archive was the Phantasy Star Cave (which I could not in good conscience support since they also hosted ROMs the last time I checked). How about Phantasy-star.net. It seems to have a fanfiction section and . . . oh hey . . . look at that. In Progress: Phantasy Star II, Restoration by Rune Lai. Well, I'd say you probably already know about that one. But yeah, there aren't a lot of sites like that around anymore. That's too bad all the Phantasy Star stuff at FF.net is lumped all together since there's quite a bit of difference between the classic stuff and what currently comes out. (To the point I pretty much facepalm every time I see Phantasy Star or Shining Something-or-other in the news because it's just not what I remember anymore.) I know what you mean. I'm the same way with Mario. He used to be so cool until he started going outside of his platformer genre. I'm not really interested in getting new readers or reviews (because this name's not writing anymore) so much as putting the story out there so if anyone searches for it wondering if it ever got finished they can find it. For that purpose I'd say it'd be worth it to post if you had an inactive account, but if you are making a new account for the one story I would still say it's probably not worth it. Of course, it's ultimately your choice.
