Looks like they're hiring for a majority of positions, so whatever they're working on is probably in the early design phase right now. I wouldn't peg anything being ready to show for a couple years, and then being that this is a Japanese studio, the game itself probably won't be ready for another 2-3 after that.

www.rpgfan.com/news/2017/5930.htmlRPGfans take on it. Still makes me interested in whatever comes out of this. Terms like "high fantasy" and "Norse mythology" are things I like to hear.

I, too, like to see various presentations or interpretations of Norse mythology, but I'm getting a bit tired of that extending to nothing more than a big tree they're calling Yggdrasil, or maybe a big wolf named Fenris showing up. Or a bad guy named Loki. I think Valkyrie Profile and manga/anime series Ah! My Goddess is the only two franchises I know of that has given it any more depth than that.
...that has been made in Japan, that is. There's also a game called Jotun that I bought on PS4, which is literally about nothing but vikings and Norse mythology. The Banner Saga also looked like one, but that one ended up being about a purely fictional world and accompanying mythology that just looked very viking-ish.
I'm looking at this with some interest too, but yeah, if they're going to do anything Norse in it, they better step up their game on that. A lot!

It would be nice to have something Norse, like really heavily Norse-influenced, rather than the token famous bits. There are a lot of fun (and funny) bits I remember reading as a kid that a lot of people just don't know about. Like if you're going to use Loki, why not the part about how his great plan to help the gods is to play seductive decoy and run off with a guy's horse? (And it totally was a seductive decoy because Loki comes back pregnant and gives birth to Sleipnir.) There's a lot of gods being jerks and trying to get out of agreements, manipulating agreements, and misleading people to their own advantage. (Though to be fair, a lot of the people they were being jerks too were also jerks.) The Megaten games sometimes have Norse sub-plots or side quests, but that's just because they incorporate all the world mythologies. Like Devil Survivor reskins Baldr as Beldr (to fit the naming convention of the major demon players of the story) and nothing in the world will hurt him except for mistletoe, same as in the mythology. Of course the protagonist manages to find that, through the intervention of an unknown assistant (later revealed to be Loki), and uses it to kill Beldr.

Of the big mythologies I do like Norse the best, but I wish we'd get a few more. The last game to do a really interesting take on mythology that, I think, gave it new life was Too Human. Unfortunately, they cut the game off just as it was getting interesting, planning on making a trilogy by cutting it into three pieces. Kind of like what they did with The Hobbit. Honestly, I wish we'd get a few more mythologies into the mix. I would love to see some Celtic, Native American, African, or even Aztec. Something new. All we ever see is Norse, Greek/Roman, Egyptian. Sure, we may get glimpses of it here and there, but I'm talking about really getting into it.
I was talking to some friends about old cartoons which sparked interests in some obscure mythos. It was a conversation that mostly centered around Gargoyles and its use of the Banshee, Oberon, Puck, and a few others, but I also brought up a more recent one in the form of Huntik. Granted the second season was not the greatest, but the series went more in depth with some of the stories and brought up more obscure myths than most kids would be able to recognize. I just want a little more of what's out there.
Now, addressing the elephant in the room. My hatred of Square still stands, so it is doubtful that I will play this game. That being said I haven't really said, "Ooh I can't wait for this game!" about anything that has some out in recent years. PS4, XB1, WIIU. All have little draw for me because the mainstream games are just rehashes with better graphics, the underground sneaks one in occasionally, but even NIS seems to be losing a bit of steam. The indy scene has all the interesting ideas, but the budget often isn't enough to get the game up to the last system's level of polish. I see the second crash on the horizon, and I see it being just what the industry needs.

I think it'll be unlikely we'll see any JRPGs with Native American, Meso American, or African mythologies (maybe Celtic, if inspiration strikes the right person) just because there's very little cultural influence on them and the Japanese aren't big cultural explorers. They know some parts of western Europe and the United States because those countries are huge cultural exporters. Movies, books, even games. But I'm surprised every time I see something the comes from a lesser part of the world. I'm reading A Bride's Story right now, which is a manga set in Central Asia, so essentially following the nomadic horse tribe culture. It's a rare setting for a manga, and it's a lot closer to Japan since at least it's on the same continent. If you like indie games though, an African studio put together their own African inspired action-RPG on Steam. It's supposed to be pretty good, but being indie I imagine it's also shorter and a much smaller experience.
