Lark was enjoying some Secret of Mana goodness when he heard a noise that could be the harbinger of doom- terrified clucking. And even worse, it came from the kitchen.
Lark growled as he paused his game, drew his Cross Blade, and raced to the kitchen to beat Kalia there. "Dammit, Aryn, we've been through this... huh?"
It was the right place, but the wrong guardian. Solana was holding Giblet in a very unusual way. The chicken was nestled against Solana's waist, her back to the floor. Solana's right arm supported the chicken's back, with her fingers gently pressing Giblet's wing to her side. Her left index finger was between Giblet's legs just above her feet, with her thumb and middle finger securing the legs.
"I'm sorry, sweetie, it was more like this," Solana said softly.
"What the hell are you doing?" Lark asked, sheathing his sword.
"Practicing. "
"What for? "
"The raptor handling class I'm taking online," Solana explained, "But we're too far from the ocean for me to ask any fishing raptors to help, and the penguins are too big and the wrong build. Giblet's the closest thing we have."
Lark stared at the contented chicken in disbelief. "You're fine now?"
"Cluck."
"Oooookay. Just don't do that with Kalia or Maria." Lark shrugged as he left.
"Thanks, Giblet. Let's go practice weighing you, okay?" Solana cooed to the bird.
Lark stopped and turned around. "If that's for Aryn, I'm dragging you BOTH to the Battle Board!"
"Noted!" was the happy reply as soft clucks echoed her.
Lark shook his head as he went to go pick up his game again.
There's a huge, famous university nearby me that I'm desperately trying to get a job with in the biology, health, or Raptor Center areas. I had had no idea that they took in injured birds until a friend posted a picture on Facebook, and I have an application in for a job to help look after the birds. As they tend to favor students for the jobs and I had studied somewhere else, I decided to take some online courses to kick open the door and for fun. (It seems to be helping. I have a number of applications 'under review' as opposed to being rejected right away.)
If there are ANY animals I love as much as my beloved sea creatures, it's the birds. Too bad my own pet bird is WAY too small to practice this.
