Aryn had pulled Solana into the kitchen hours earlier to help with a lovely new culinary creation. Delicious smells, loud instrumental music, and the noise of oven timers had drifted out ever since. Eziban was also running in and out, putting the final adjustments on a new type of wine.
Finally, after supper, it was time for the unveiling. Eziban brought out a bucket of ice filled with a few bottles of seagrape wine in one hand, and a tray with an enormous pitcher of chilled milk and cups in the other.
Solana came out next with the fruit of their hard work- an enormous guava cake carved in the shape of a crown. Pressed in here and there were cupcakes carved and colored like gemstones.
Aryn followed to a huge round of applause. She was beaming and carrying two enormous platters heaped with more gemstone-shaped cupcakes. "The birthday boy is playing 'Regalia' and is also a king- what else would do?" she asked.
Intent on her triumph and oversized platters of tasty cupcakes, Aryn didn't notice that the corner of the rug she was approaching was upturned. With a squeak, she tripped and sent the platters flying.
Eziban reacted quickly. The rug, being made of cotton and rayon, responded to the earth essence and shot up at his command. The rug caught his wife in midair and lowered her gently to the ground.
The cupcakes were another story. They were scattered across the whole floor.
"Dammit," Aryn growled, slamming a fist on the freshly cleaned but still pastry-covered floor. "I had all the good ones for us on one platter and all the regular ones for the pansies on another. I don't remember which wrappers I used for which!" She looked at Lark entreatingly. "Lark, could you try one?"
Lark looked terrified, understandably so on this day. He picked up a cupcake tinted the color of an aquamarine with a green wrapper, unwrapped it, and carefully tried it. He visibly relaxed at the delicious taste and lack of explosions or giant items being triggered to fall from overhead "This is good. Tamarind with ginger, right?" Aryn nodded as Lark took another bite. "The green ones are spicy. Leave them for us."
Eziban helped his wife to her feet and gave her a deep kiss, ignoring Maria's scowl, when cries of surprise erupted.
"What?!"
"OW!"
"What the hell?!"
Solana shrieked with the others, as a ruby-colored cupcake from a yellow wrapper felt like she had swallowed one of Aryn's fire spells. The wine was ignored as everyone raced for the milk. The cooling beverage naturally had enough water in it that Solana directed it to those who were far off from the pitcher.
Meanwhile, Lark was laughing hysterically as he peeled a cupcake of its yellow wrapper. "Finally, I get all of YOU for a change on this day!"
Everyone glared at him and replied in unison, "DAMMIT, LARK!"
Aryn began slicing the safe guava cake as Eziban grabbed a pile of small plates. "Forgot which wrappers, eh?" he whispered to her.
"It happens," Aryn shrugged with a grin, "But are you going to complain, my knight in shining armor?"
"Nope."
Figured I'd flip things for you from my pyro this year. Hope it was a good one for you, and bring good things in the year to come!
