So a few times I have made mention of Critical Role. A show in which "a group of nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons." When I brought it up, the show was small, but growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. When it hit the end of campaign 1, I thought it had reached its height. I was wrong. The second campaign has more popularity than the first, and it is legit popularity. Many of you may notice and influx in nerd culture, D&D players, and paraphernalia asking "How do you want to do this?" or "Is it Thursday yet?" This show showed me what the game could be and is responsible for my game that has lasted the past two years.
Why am I bringing this up? They just did something amazing, further branching nerddom into the real world. The original goal was to was to make a roughly 30 minute animated special. With the goal of $750,000, and the subject matter that it be based on their D&D game, pretty much no production studio would touch them. So they brought it to Kickstarter putting in 5 stretch goals up to $3 million.
~12 hours later~
In the middle of this Q&A session they hit $3.5 million.
They couldn't leave it there. They decided to add more goals, up to $8.8 Million. They hit that, catapulting them into the most funded AV project ever funded on Kickstarter. Not only that, but the stretch goals make the special 2 episodes long, plus the animation of a full arc of one of the most epic arcs in campaign 1. I am happy to say that I backed this at the $200 mark.
Today, they did the unthinkable. No more official stretch goals (but one unofficial secret goal), but they hit over $10 million. $10 MILLION! WTF.
Now, Critters like myself understand what is is special about this game and its players, but for those of you who don't . . . tell me this isn't special.
