I revisited some old threads and noticed that Anon had had a note about meeting up for a convention in Detroit. A few years ago, I went to AwesomeCon with DarkKnight's family and it was indeed awesome.
So, I'll leave this here for people to post about conventions they're attending and seeing about meetups. Galaxycon just passed here, but there is an Anime convention coming up in March. (Though, this being Minnesota, it's likely to be freezing cold and possible blizzards.)

I rarely attend general fan conventions anymore, but since we have a few writers, I'll be attending the Nebula Conference in May 2020. It's open to everyone. The 2020 one is in southern California, but the conference moves every two years so it could be somewhere closer to you in 2021.
You do not need to be professionally published to attend, but there's also no official programming other than panels, obviously geared towards professional or extremely serious writers. No basic 101 level material. It's all 201 and up. I expect I'll be spending half the con hanging out in the lobby or the bar networking (aka catching up with my writer friends).
