Some of the writers I know ran with the idea of creating a non-profit to help new creatives (writers, artists, editors, podcasters, etc.) get a foothold in their field. The idea was to make a contest with cash prizes while also providing mentorship. The org is still in the early stages, but is making progress and one of the big things they're doing this year is a virtual convention called Flights of Foundry. Being virtual, this removes the largest barrier for entry, which is money for travel. Instead all you'll need is Zoom to participate in panels and Discord if you want to socialize. The convention itself is free though donations are appreciated and will go towards administrative costs and supporting the next iteration of the contest. The hope is to eventually provide meat space workshops for contest winners (though obviously that will be down the road after we can stop worrying so much about the virus). The convention is May 16-17th and programming will run almost all hours of the day the entire weekend. (This is to accommodate the different time zones and continents people may be living in.) I'll be on a panel on Sunday about how much you can charge for your labor of love (eeeek). A lot of the panels are geared towards fiction writers since the starting collective was about 75% writers and 25% artists, but there's also stuff about games, comics, escape rooms and more general topics like managing the business and legal side of your work.
