I'm still working on this story and plan to post it once it's done. It's going to be a while, as I'm concentrating on learning new medical techniques with animals at work and reviewing for my LAT certification, but I wanted to give you guys a taste of what's to come. (Okay, and wake up the muse.) I hope you enjoy.
Prologue- The Legend of the Double New Moon
Life, like the sea, has a way of bringing people together- Arthur Curry, Aquaman
Long ago, Merna was a world covered with chaotic waters and completely devoid of life. The world's spirit slept peacefully in the Universe, undisturbed by the doings of mortals.
The sea serpents came first, arriving from the doomed world of Atlantis in order to search out and colonize a new homeworld. Adept at surviving in aquatic environments, they claimed this world for their own. The world's spirit awoke and welcomed these new children, conversing with them and learning their ways. Though the serpents adapted, Merna was still not ideal for the flourishing of life, and so it remade itself through the Great Birth in order to welcome more lifeforms to itself.
The elves arrived first to this lovely new world, and humans soon after. Merna enjoyed its new children, but soon realized that it would need help to guide them. So it created two moons to help govern the seas and the hearts of mortals- the lavender moon that would be named 'Girith', and the amber moon that would be called 'Chizu'. Girith would encourage mortals to tend and treasure their home, while Chizu would inspire them to look to the greater Universe and live in harmony.
Even with the new moons, there was not peace. Girith's greater size meant that people focused only on the ground beneath their feet, and they ignored their history. They stopped reaching out to other worlds. So Merna grew lonely without the trade and livelihood of others, and decided to increase Chizu's size.
Alas, there was still not peace. With Chizu's prominence, the people lost interest in tending their own world and grew greedy for the riches and sights of other worlds. They kept their eyes on the sky and ignored the consequences of their neglect. Others would supply what they needed.
Merna grew desperate, and pushed Chizu further away in the heavens. There was balance between the moons, between the ground and reality and the skies and dreams. The two had different orbits and different cycles most of the year.
However, on one very special night in Earth Moon, there is a rare phenomenon- the night of the Double New Moon.
A night for beginnings.
On the night of the Double New Moon, there is only a glint of each moon visible, about equal in size. It is said that on this night, each moon encourages the other to grow and flourish and do its duty to the best of its abilities. Once they have grown, they balance the world and each other perfectly.
It is because of this that Headmistress Solana Kesai chose this day to begin the new school year for Estu university, to allow each student to flourish and become the best they can be.
May it be so in all our lives.
