I just learned about this a few days ago while watching a playthrough of 'Defender of the Future'. I do wish it could have been ported to the PS2 as well.
Even though my hydromaniac hails from the Sega version of Ecco's Atlantis, I do have a few nods to 'DotF' there. Some of Atlantis' natural features, such as the Aquamarine Bay and Abyss of Inferno, come from level names from that game.

I didn't realize there were games beyond the Genesis ones. I really liked Ecco conceptually when I played the first one, but it was too hard for me to beat so I never followed the rest of the series.

Oooh, yeah. It took me about twenty times to beat the Vortex Queen using 'The Dolphin' screen cheat to teleport back and skip redoing 'Welcome to the Machine'. And some of those jumps are evil, especially in the Atlantis levels. There was a third game planned after 'Tides of Time' where Ecco goes back in time to help the Atlanteans, but it never got made. On the plus side, that left me a lot of room for designing my avatar's version. Found a better video with the planned music.

I think I got stuck in level 2 before I decided I was done with the game. I eventually saw pictures of later levels in game magazines, and thought the story must get pretty nuts later on, but I never got out of normal looking blue ocean levels.

(Laughs) Oh, does it ever. They got influenced by 'Pink Floyd' songs and Stephen King. And I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good at it, (I'm too used to turn-based RPGs) but what I like best is playing around in the different levels.
And oh, the music of the Sega CD games is some of my favorite of all time. Lovely for relaxing, or to help with a dangerous drive on icy roads, or writing.
