It's finally happening. The US 3DS eshop is closing. Credit cards stop being usable May 23rd of this year, eshop cards stop August 29th, and Nintendo Network ID wallet in "late March" 2023. (Games can still be redownloaded after purchase date.)
I knew this was coming for a while, since Japan's own closure was announced last year, but I still haven't gotten off my butt to buy the Ace Attorney DLC cases and there are Game Gear virtual console ports that I want since my Game Gear is probably in the worst condition of all my game systems (and the battery backup for all those games was the worst of all the systems I owned). I remember the Game Gear ports were pretty cheap too, and the biggest reason I want to get them on 3DS is they've never been ported to anything else! I actually checked if they were on Switch since that's a newer system, and they're not on Steam either. Sega's released Genesis collections and QoL remasters of Master System games, but no love for Game Gear. (To be honest, I remember being surprised they were on 3DS when I first stumbled across them.)
One of the games is Crystal Warriors, which was a strategy RPG I remember really liking as a kid, but the the battery backup died on me only a few months after getting the game so I never got to finish it! And I want to pick up Defenders of Oasis, which is the game Agmar came from when I did the tournament battling stuff. I don't know if I'll replay at time point, but it'll be nice to have without going through the hassle of emulation and worrying about malware. The last Game Gear game I want to pick up is Shining Force: Sword of Hajya, which I remember being an unexpectedly good little strategy RPG with a neat plot twist and element of personal tragedy (for a game of that time period). I don't think I'd replay at this point, but it's nice to have the option.
I also saw Dragon Crystal for sale but that game can die in a hole. xD I bought it back in the day because hey, it was an RPG on Game Gear, and I like RPGs, but it's what we now call a roguelike. It's brutal, the dungeon is procedurally generated, and you'll probably never see the ending. I never did. It didn't even really have a story, which is one of the biggest draws for me in an RPG (the other being really flexible character creation, which it did not have either).
Edit: Well, I pulled the trigger and bought everything, lest I forget. Couple of notes since it'd been a while since I'd bought anything from the 3DS eshop. 1) You have to buy DLC through the actual game. I'd forgotten that. Which meant I had to go inside each AA game, go to its DLC menu, and buy from there. 2) Even if you're buying new games out of the eshop, you have to do it one at a time. There's no shopping cart.
While thinking over whether there's anything else I need to buy, I realized the Ace Attorney/Professor Layton game is 3DS only, but I had consciously passed on that one when it came out, and I think I'll still do that now. I don't like only knowing half the cast of the game and I don't plan on catching up on that series (and I've heard the game is more Layton then Attorney). Also, of the non-DLC that I bought, it seems the one most likely to get ported to a newer system someday.
I also realized there's a lot of Shin Megami Tensei DLC I never bought, but despite my affection for the series, I haven't been fond of its DLC train, which generally seems like fairly optional stuff for the hard core fan (like super hard optional boss fights or fanservice DLCs of specific demons/characters VOs).
