There's a Kickstarter going on for a spiritual successor to Shadow Hearts. Dark, 1920s, guy who turns into a monster, creepy enemies. It will probably be closer to the first Shadow Hearts in tone rather than the later ones because there's an interview with the director on Gematsu where he talks about how he was repeatedly requested to lighter the atmosphere of the later games. Koudelka, the prequel to Shadow Hearts, was too dark for me *shiver*, but I think it's telling that the canon ending for both Koudelka and the first Shadow Hearts is the bad ending that the player is most likely to get. (If you do everything right you can get the good ending, but frankly most people won't.) So I think that tells a bit of what the creator's storytelling inclination is.
Penny Blood, the new game, looks like it's going to be dark, a bit gross, and we're going to have sanity points; hopefully while facing baddies that are likely to cost it. Because as much as I liked Shadow Hearts: Covenant, I did not think losing sanity points while in combat with mafia goons just because it's part of the combat system should have happened.
Anyway, I know someone else here played/watched Shadow Hearts before, so I figured I'd post a link. It's a really weird Kickstarter since it's paired with the spiritual successor to Wild Arms, but you don't have to have to suppose both games unless you want to (though both will be funded if they hit their target). I don't know exactly how that's going to work, but as long as I get something like more Shadow Hearts that's all I care about. I'm really not a Wild Arms fan (in fact every time I hear that whistle in the music it just makes me really angry and I don't know why), but I know there are people who love it so if they get their own spiritual successor, fine by me.
