I've read a few volumes of My Life as a Villainess and watched the two anime seasons. They're all right, though I think the story didn't know what to do with itself once Katarina survives her first year of magic school (when the original character she was reincarnated into was supposed to die or be exiled) and the author suddenly discovered the series was popular enough that he didn't have to end at his ending. He even backpedaled what looked like a prelude to making one of the pairings canon so the story could go on with Katarina being romantically being attached to, well, anyone.
I really mean anyone. Katarina's schtick is that she's so nice and vibrant to all these people dealing with various hang-ups and traumas that they fall in love with her, only she's too thick-headed to realize it.
She's reborn in the world of an otome game (rather than the MMORPG most male protags get when they isekai somewhere) so it seems only a matter of time before anime about being in an otome game would be an actual otome game. It came out in Japan last year, and given that it wasn't picked up for localization immediately, I figured that was that. Anime games sell better when the anime is currently running or between seasons, and Season 2 has already wrapped up with no announcement of a Season 3 (though I think there's a movie announcement floating around without a release date).
But Villainess's localization was announced at Anime Expo this weekend (!) so we're finally getting it. And I already see comments from fans complaining about there not being a yuri route (since in the books/anime it's pretty clear everybody wants Katarina regardless of gender), but the game was done by Otomate, which is Idea Factory's otome brand, so in keeping with its expected audience, only the men can be romanced and they even added two original dudes for more romance options (which has got to stick in the craw of anyone who ships her with Mary, Maria, or Sophia). People can complain, but I'm sure the anime production team and the author knew what they were going to be getting with Otomate at the helm and they were presumably fine with it since they gave them the license.
Since Katarina presumably will choose someone in the game rather than the endless faffing about in the books/anime, I'm planning to get it, but I find it funny that who I would want to pair her up with doesn't mesh at all with who I'd like the most if I was playing independently without knowledge of the source material. For the record, I ship her with Geordo. He's the only one with enough guts to make subtext text and anything less than full-on sucking face isn't going to get through to her. But as player I would usually go for an Alan or Nicol type of character. (Siblings can sit in the dumpster even if they're unrelated, so Keith would always be a no for me, even though I otherwise find his third wheeling hilarious.)
