I've known about this for a while. I think that's because I still read gaming magazines every now and then.
I was wondering, though, whether or not it was gonna be official.
If it's just for PS3, though...

I hope it does well, but I have my reservations . . . Hold for laughs . . . Okay. No, seriously though how many times have we seen it where an old game series is going to get "an upgrade" and it does not turn out too well. Contra did not get upgraded well. Castlevania has a spotty track record at best. Look at any Mega Man after X5. Pure crap (debatable with X6).
I want it to be good, but it is more or less a swinging fighter/shooter. It is a game that will inevitably be compared to Spider-man for swinging and fighting, and the myrid of TPS' put out in recent years for shooting does not yield high expectations. We'll have to see.

Oh, wow, we'll have to see what they do with it. The NES version brings back many fond memories of hanging with my brothers and cousin, even if it was quite strange getting used to no jump button.
We're also waiting on the Splatterhouse remake, though I've heard the graphics might interfere with what made the Sega version so scary in the first place. Some of those music tracks and cutscenes from the third would scare the hell out of anyone.

On the other hand, the Rygar remake turned out quite ok. GTA, for what it's worth, worked better in 3D than in 2D and as far as I can tell, the 3D Mario games aren't all that worse for wear compared to the 2D ones. The same can probably be said for the Sonic games, at least as far as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Also, Maximo was a fun game and easily noticeable as a Ghosts 'n Goblins remake. Moving 2D games into the 3D realm is always a crapshoot, and it's highly unlikely people who loved the older version will be completely satisfied with the new versions, but it doesn't HAVE to mean that the new version will be bad. I guess it just depends on who you put to work on it. And if you're thinking older games that are just upgraded graphicwise, but otherwise play the same, I can easily add R-Type Delta and Final, Gradius V and G-Darius to the equation. And that's just games I remember offhand. Incidentally, when it comes to Bionic Commando, I'm fondly remembering the arcade version. I've hardly played the NES version at all, and, given how fond I was of the arcade game, I wasn't overly happy about what they did with it. (Which is about the same as I felt about Rygar, arcade to NES.)

You are correct, but to play Devil's Advocate, Maximo and Rygar were not promoted as "BIG" titles. Usually when is something is being hyped they are trying something that is experimental and want people to be on board. As far as the Mario and Sonic games go I don't think the question was ever about simply going from 2D to 3D. Mario, Sonic, and GTA never stopped their series'. Bionic Commando has to make a forced evolution, jumping from 8-bit graphics and gameplay, to current technology, in one move. It's like having a level 10 join your level 50 group. They are either going to get lucky and gain a lot of EXP fast, but not do much, going to hold their own due to having massive stats, or they are going to be killed every battle they are put in.

The only question I really care about is whether the game itself turns out well, and that's why I made the comparisons to games like Rygar, because, believe it or not, I consider the arcade originals to be about equally "hyped" as far as fame goes. Being European, most of us basically went with the Commodore 64 instead of the NES for our gaming needs, and the Commodore 64 got an arcade conversion of Bionic Commando and not a complete reimagining of the arcade original. (For better or worse.)
Which is why my viewpoint might be somewhat skewed. Bionic Commando for the NES might have had an exponential success in the US. I honestly don't know. To me, the NES version turned out to be an admittedly bigger, but indefinitely slower and more cumbersome experience than the arcade original. (Hence why I was so disappointed with it.) Even the Commodore 64 conversion of the arcade original, graphically ugly as it was, brought over most of the energetic pace of the original game. (That's the European conversion, for those of you who might be using google or Wikipedia or something. Not the vastly different American conversion.) The same might actually be said about the NES version of Rygar, except that it was hardly slow. Just very, very different from what I was used to playing. So, for me, the Bionic Commando remake is the same as with Rygar; a new-gen remake I never really expected.
This is probably why it's so awkward for me discussing older videogames with Americans, mostly because you had your Bionic Commandos, your Marios, your Zeldas and whatnot, while I had Flimbo's Quest, Last Ninja, the Monty games, the Miner/Jet Set Willy games, the Wizballs, the Cauldron's and Forbidden Forest.
