In the same spirit as the What are you playing thread, I've decided to see if this kind of topic can get any play. I mean, as gamers I think it is obvious that we all do a lot of reading whether it be actual books or manga. Also making this a Sticky so it won't get lost. So I'll start things off: Finally got around to picking up Groove Adventure Rave/Rave Master manga where the anime left off. Only in volume 11 of 35 right now, and I plan to basically take my time and use this as a time filler. Next week I'll be getting my hands on the latest Star Wars book Allies (buy books on Amazon...way cheaper than going to store, like almost 50% cheaper)....I'll chew that one up and spit it out within two days

Oh, dear. I'll try not to flood this thread any more than necessary. At work I just finished a Burn Notice novel that came in, (The Fix-Up), and really enjoyed it. The author captured a lot of the nuances from the show, even if he did make a mistake giving Sam's alter ego as 'Chazz Finley' instead of 'Chuck Finley'. As in the show, they didn't go into exact detail on making weaponry, (tear gas in this case) but did well in extending Michael's voiceovers into narration. With that done, I dove back into Louis L'amour's 'The Walking Drum' again, partly for pleasure and partly for inspiration on a separate project. The man does his homework and has a nice, clean style of writing. I'll have to get back into his 'Sacketts' series in the future.

I recently finished Aria, and is currently also reading Kozue Amano's next manga, Amanchu. Other than that, I've been reading Bunny Drop (which isn't quite what it sounds like ^^;; ), Umi no Misaki, Shinigami no Ballad, Yotsuba, Natsume's Book of Friends and Rosario + Vampire.
I'm also picking up Naruto whenever I can, though it's the only really long-running series I'm investing any time in presently. (Well, aside from one of the most longest running manga ever; Ah! My Goddess.)
It's also highly likely I'll be rereading Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou some time in the near future, since the urge has been with me for a while.

Currently on my reading table:
Just finished rereading Eve Forward's Villains By Necessity. Funny, somebody finally got it for me last year after I somehow misplaced my original copy and I only got around to it just now. It is, indeed, just as good as I remember. If, by some miracle, you can find it cheap in a used bookstore (it's out of print) or are able to check it out in your local library, do so. You won't be sorry.
Since Solana mentioned Burn Notice, I should point out that another book in that series should be coming out soon. I will, of course, plan on acquring that to read as well.
Manga-wise:
I am trying to stay current with the following as the current chapters are released: Case Closed, Skip Beat, Q.E.D., and Tantei Gakuen Q. All but Skip Beat are mystery related, and all (including SB) have a decent amount of comedic elements in them.
I'm also reading through a series called Liar Game, and that is a good deal more... serious, though the premise is a little off the wall. I'm liking the characterizations of the main players so far, though, so I'll keep on reading.

Do our own stories count? If so, starting on Children of Hope. ;D Also read through my Hot Shots parody, though I'm still waiting to get the next part.

heh heh heh Goes to show you always choose free shipping with Amazon even if it says 5-7 days. My copy of Star Wars Fate of the Jedi: Allies shipped today...release day, instead of next week when they said my copy would. heh heh heh. I'll have it by Thursday I'll finish it by the weekend, sadly. After that I'm going to hold off reading til my 17 hour train ride the following week where I'll tackle the complete Ultimate Spider-Man collection.

Currently:
Kafka by the Shore (English and Japanese)
Zombie Survival Guide
I also need to pick up the Dresden Files again. I put that on hiatus after getting really busy with other things, and haven't gone past Book 4 yet. KF

Say, Kizyr, out of curiosity, how is that Zombie Survival Guide? (It's one of the most requested books at the store.)
Also, Ambrienne, do you remember which Burn Notice novel explained Michael's love of yogurt? It wasn't this one and it's played so many times in the show that I'm wondering where it came from.
Thanks, guys.

Say, Kizyr, out of curiosity, how is that Zombie Survival Guide? (It's one of the most requested books at the store.) The Zombie Survival Guide is really good... It feels like a cross between a short story anthology and a full-length novel--meaning, on one end you have background stories and allusions to specific events (plus of course the appendix of recorded attacks throughout history), and on the other end you have a richly developed background (how the infection began, how it spreads, etc.). I already read World War Z (which personally I like better, both because of the story and the narrative style), so I backed up a step and read the Survival Guide afterwards. I'd actually recommend WWZ to anyone who requests the Survival Guide if they haven't already read it. KF

Currently at home I'm re-reading Eat, Pray, Love for the umpteenth time. I'm really hoping that they don't screw up the movie, and that they incorporate a lot of Liz's monologue that made the book itself so special. We'll have to see how Julia Roberts does in the role.
At work, I'm skimming through Anthony Bourdain's 'Nasty Bits' and waiting impatiently for his newest book to come into the store. The girl who runs new books is helping me watch for it. ;D

Too much good stuff coming in at work! The newest 'Castle' book, the third book of Stephen Lawhead's 'Pendragon' series finally came in after weeks of waiting, and also the two newer 'Burn Notice' novels. A funny coincidence on the last one. You fans will remember how Michael will sometimes send people away to safer places than Miami if need be. This time around, Barry was scouting around in none other than the city of my (RL) birth, Valley City ND. I haven't lived there since I was two, but it was still pretty sweet and makes me wonder how the writer chose it.

I might not have as many updates now, being no longer surrounded by glorious books for forty hours a week, but they're cherished just as much. Presently I'm reading one of Mercedes Lackey's newest, 'Gwenhwyfar'. It's been interesting to see the different takes on the legendary queen, from the pink and white one in Mists of Avalon to the warrioress in 'The Dragon Queen' to the pagan in Rosalind Miles' trilogy. So far it's an excellent read with yet another version of her, although the writer in me has been noticing the occasional typos and missed punctuation.

So, I got a Kindle recently, not a Christmas gift, but with my own money. Now, don't get me wrong. I like paper and ink books (well, except those ones that smell like newspaper; that makes me sneeze) and will continue to do my best to support that kind of medium for media. I was, however, going through a massive book withdrawl... and a desire to complete my Terry Pratchett book collection. So far, I've got the first five of the Discworlds... and the complete colored fairy tale books (you know, the Blue, Olive, etc.), and a freaking huge backlog of free classics to read through. All this stuff you ever wanted to read/thought about reading but never had a chance to...
The last two I read were The Scarlet Pimpernel and Dracula. Currently, I'm a little over halfway through Frankenstein. I find myself identifying with the monster. ><

Rereading Fire Sea by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman as part of a writing exercise of my own choosing. I loved this book as a teenager and figure what better way to understand how a good fantasy novel comes together than to break it down into a detailed outline.
