It was good.
Buuuuuuuuut.....in the end the book was better. They did a good job in Part 1 not fudging too much. Part 2, though, was very very fudged...especially the climax. Avoiding spoilers, I'll just say JK's version of the final confrontation moments was much more powerful and well put together. The movie felt a little chaotic, and the changes to some of the major moments just were not as good.
Primarily for me it was Harry .vs. Voldemort: in the book it was perfect. Harry's sudden return...his speech...the final test of wills. It was done very well in the book. I felt the movie "spiced" it up for movie sake and lost some of the power of the moment. That whole final battle scene was just better in the book. They took out so many moments that would have been cool to see.
What also bugged me was the cheering and clapping by the rest of the theater...this reminds me why, unless I'm being forced to by a third party, I don't go see movies on opening days. Going to see a movie several days later in a mostly empty theater is way better...no annoying people.

I'm talking with a friend of mine right now, and we both agree that salvation can be hand for those of us who in the end have always felt somewhat short changed by the liberties taken in the movies.
It is my belief, and it is probably already being discussed, that at some point we will get Harry Potter the Animated Series. 7 Seasons. 26 Eps a pop. Plenty of room each season to tell the whole story from each book.
It's too much a lucrative prospect not to do it.
Get some good animation. Throw it on the Cartoon Network evening Prime Time lineup, and you'd have a whole new Harry Potter money machine.

I've yet to see the movie, but I've read the book and I know after reading the end of the book I was concerned about how well they would handle the movie. Some of the best character moments from the books have never made it to the big screen (for instance, Neville meeting his parents in the fifth book, I was teary-eyed as a reader and the scene didn't make it to the movie) so I have rather dim hopes of my favorite Deathly Hallows chapter making it unscathed since it was virtually all backstory.
I'm sure it'll still be fun to watch, but I think being a movie by its nature hampers its ability to tell the whole story.
As for a Harry Potter animated series, I think that would be fantastic. Seven years of ratings!

Seven years of ratings! They butchered Order of the Phoenix in general. It was a shadow of the book. I described the movie climax scenes compared to the book to my friend (who has read it) and his instant response was "Fail." He really gets all pissed off about OotP. His favorite moment in the entire book is when they get the button that reads "Rescue Mission." Of course that never made it in the movie.

They didn't even mention Quidditch once in OotP. I'll agree with you on preferring to hit movies after they've been out a while for smaller audiences, but there was one moment I'll never forget. I went to the Omnitheater at the Zoo to catch 'The Dark Knight' before it was released to the public, (being a zoo volunteer had its benefits ) and the place was packed. SPOILERS!!! When Jim Gordon showed up alive and well, the entire audience burst into applause and cheering. It was a beautiful moment and sentiment shared by so many fans at the same time. End spoilers.

Finally watched the final movie. I cried, just a little bit, during the flashbacks of Snape and Lily. They didn't include all the flashbacks, notably they skipped the falling out between the former friends, but they added Snape finding Lily's body, which I don't believe was in the book, and I found it very moving.
I agree the final battle was better done in the book. I missed Neville killing Nagini in front of bloody well everyone instead of off to the side somewhere. I also missed Harry speech to Voldemort about who's really the master of the Elder Wand.

It's funny, my friend linked that too me the day after we saw the movie. That's a beautiful piece of art and I find it amazing how identifiable all the characters are. The one that took me a moment to puzzle out was Regulas, since he's barely in the series. If it wasn't for the locket I wouldn't have gotten him.

I sent it to a friend last night, and he totally disliked the entire piece. Kept complaining everyone looked like children etc etc.

Some of the adult characters are drawn youngish (Snape in particular), but I'm assuming the Marauders are being drawn as they were when teens/young adults. Harry's parents were only 21 when they died so they shouldn't exactly look old.

This is absolutely exquisite. Who did it, I wonder? I love how they did the Malfoys, especially Narcissa's and Draco's expressions, and the young Marauders. The marks on Bill's and Lupin's faces to show the aftermath of Fenrir are cool, and Tonks looks amazingly badass.
I just finished re-reading the book today. Haven't seen the movies yet, but would like to see Umbridge getting a little payback after OotP.

On the note of a Harry Potter anime, I found a lovely music video on Youtube. It's manga-style stills all by the same artist telling the story of Snape and Lily's relationship set to a J-pop ballad. youtu.be/v8cY6PW_zxQEdit: Found a better quality version.
