A copy of this came into work a few days ago, and after hearing nothing but good I'm thinking on giving it a go. However, I'm wondering if it's OK for someone new to the "Tales of..." series to start, or if it would make more sense to have played through "Symphonia" first. (I did start reading the manga series on onemanga and am enjoying it.) Thanks.

For the most part, none of the Tales games are related to each other, other than having similar battle styles, spell names, etc. The three exceptions to this are Tales of Destiny (it has a sequel that wasn't released over here), Tales of Symphonia (has a sequel that I think will be released over here), and the Tales of the World series (which has some characters from all the games made up until that point in an alternate world setting).
So, you're okay playing that one first. It's no big deal.

Hate to nitpick, Ambrienne, but the Tales of Symphonia sequel has been here for at least a few months.

I thought Kratos was in most of the Tales games and linked the stories. Am I wrong or is it just someone who looks like him? I remember this because we got a copy of Tales of the Abyss in today and it looks like him on the cover.

I find that if it doesn't have the same title then it's an entirely different story.
The Tales series is one of Namco's biggest series. None of the series are connected except that characters from past Tales games can appear in Cameo Battles at the particular game's arena. They also throw in a few easter eggs now and then.
The biggest one though, in recent games at least, is Nam Cobanda Isle. This special town-like area is full of said easter eggs.
Was it the guy at the very front you were thinking of? That would be Abyss' main character Luke Fon Fabre.

Hate to nitpick, Ambrienne, but the Tales of Symphonia sequel has been here for at least a few months. Sorry about that. This is proof that I have a tendency to ignore any system I don't own. No sense tantalizing myself with things I can't have.
