Back from my trip to Hawaii, and ended up with an unexpectedly fun seatmate on my flight there. She'd brought her Kindle to do some reading, but hadn't bothered with her Switch because she'd forgotten to charge it, and I was the reverse, having my Switch, but forgetting my books. (Alas, I did no reading this trip.) She asked what I was playing and which games I liked to play, and I said "mystery games" just to keep things general. But she immediately lit up and asked if I'd played Persona and Danganronpa, which I did not expect! We ended up having a pretty good chat on the flight over. Never had that happen before.
Usually my seatmates don't talk or they talk about things I don't care about. (I have actually feigned sleeping before to avoid a chatterbox who was too polite to wake me up, but would otherwise be happy to talk about his work or ask about my work while I was trying to read.)
Hawaii was all right. I was in Maui, which is still recovering from the wildfires last month. My brother had actually booked a rental condo on the west side of the island (where the fire was) and after all the wildfire stuff went down his booking was canceled to help house all the displaced residents, which he had no problem with, and ended up booking a different condo in the southern part of Maui (since airfares were already paid and set). Because tourism tanked he managed to book a condo he wouldn't otherwise be able to afford, and as a bonus, it came with an extra room, so he invited me along.
The reason I just called the trip all right though is that I was a little unprepared for it, so I didn't have a clear list of things to do (I'm a trip doer, not a lay abouter), and then my brother caught Covid. We think my niece gave it to him, since she had a cough she picked up in school before the flight, but she was full of energy and running around like it was no big deal. The night my brother tested positive he had a bit of a sore throat, but figured he'd be okay since he got the latest vaccine and the illness obviously wasn't having much of an affect on his daughter.
Dude got flattened the next day and laid around in bed almost the entire day and ended up vomiting later in the night.
So... I had three full days in Maui and my brother ended up sick over two of them. :\ And aside from the beach path (which was lovely), pricey resorts, and the local mall, there wasn't much else in walking distance.
When he wasn't sick though I did get to see one of the black sand lava beaches, a fruit/vegetable plantation, and the local aquarium, from which my brother bought three highly cute and squishable plushies for himself, not his daughter, and I smuggled them home in my suitcase so she wouldn't see them. She's got her own plushies without going after her parents' too. My brother loves to collect cute stuffed animals of sealife, particularly if they're unusual. This time he bought a hermit crab, a horseshoe crab, and an angler fish. (I think the angler fish is adorable with its angry face, though I had to remind my brother that his fish is a girl because if it was a boy it would be a dongle hanging off the girl.) They're still in my suitcase for now, but he'll be reunited with them when I see him next weekend.
Wish the trip had gone better since I didn't really get to check out Haleakalā National Park or the Iao Valley Monument nature walk. Also, all the cultural museums are apparently out in the western part of the island where the fire was so we never went out that way. It's not the highest on my list of places to visit (I don't like humidity ), but I wouldn't be adverse to going back again.
